Character Improvement -- Physical, Professional & Educational Training

Education & Training is how a character improves their abilities and skills, and learns new skills, once you've started adventuring. Your character can improve their abilities and skills over time with dedication. Every year, you'll make a training plan, and at the end of that year, you'll roll to check your dedication. If successful, your gains become permanent.

For your table, this requires a campaign calendar and keeping track of the weeks as they elapse. Remember, Hyperlite works on a 1 week cycle, and you'll find that the weeks go by pretty quickly as a Galactic Adventurer.

Physical training requires dedication up front and at the end. Professional training benefits can be gained immediately, but they're harder to make permanent. Finally, educational training can raise your EDU, or get you a new non-combat skill but as with professional training, it can be challenging to keep the gains.

After you have gained your separation benefits, make a training plan, then make any initial dedication rolls. You may change your plan at any time and start a new plan, but any temporary gains are lost and you may have only one training plan active at a time. You must remain on plan for a year to get a chance to make gains permanent.

You may choose one training option: physical, professional, or education.

Abilities may not exceed 15. Skills may not exceed +5.

With a few exceptions, dedication rolls are tests of self and thus are made with 2D and require "less than or equal to" to succeed. Check the specific rules text to be sure.

Physical Training

The Gym or The Club? The gym builds STR, AGI & END. At the club, you can improve your fighting skills, or learn new ones.

The Gym

Make a dedication roll up front by rolling 2D over your INT. (dedicated, repetitive exercise is difficult to sustain the higher your INT, as you bore easily and likely have attention span issues) If successful, you may temporarily add +1 to STR, AGI & END. At the end of the year, roll again. If both rolls were successful, your gains become permanent. If only the second roll was successful, you may temporarily add +1 to your physical abilities if you continue your gym training plan another year, at which time you may roll again to make them permanent. If only the first roll was successful, you may keep the temporary gains if you continue the plan. Otherwise, the gains are lost.

The Club

Choose two fighting skills and make a dedication roll up front by testing your INT. (martial arts and shooting sports are very mentally stimulating) If successful, add a temporary +1 to each. At the end of the year, test your INT again. If successful, those gains become permanent. If not, you may retain the temporary gains if you continue the plan. Otherwise, the gains are lost.

Professional Training

Advance Your Skills You can choose to improve any 2 non-fighting skills you already have.

For skills you already possess, no up-front dedication roll is needed. Gain a temporary +1 to both skills you choose, and at the end of a year check your dedication by rolling your INT minus the higher of the two skills or less. If successful, your gains become permanent. If not, you lose the temp gains unless you continue the plan.

Continuing Education

Back to School Boost your EDU ability, or start a brand new skill.

General Education

If you choose EDU test your dedication up front by rolling over your EDU score. If successful, add a temporary +1 to your EDU. Roll again at the end of the year over your temp EDU score. If successful again the gain becomes permanent. If the second roll was the first success, you may add a temporary +1 to EDU if you continue the plan. Otherwise, those gains are lost.

New Skill Training

If you choose a new skill test your dedication up front by rolling your EDU score or less. If successful, add the new skill at +1, but note that it's temporary. Test EDU again at the end of the year. If both tests were successful, your gains become permanent. If only the first roll was successful you may continue your training plan to keep the temporary gain, otherwise it's lost. If the second roll was successful, but not the first, you may temporarily gain the new skill or EDU point if you continue the plan. Otherwise, those gains are lost.
